Few places in the Everest region give you so much for so little effort. Syangboche is a high, open ridge just above Namche Bazaar, where Mount Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku line up across the valley. It is home to a small mountain airstrip, the legendary Everest View Hotel, and trails that lead to the Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde.
For trekkers, Syangboche is the classic acclimatization hike from Namche. For short-holiday travelers, it is the heart of the 7-day Everest View Trek, a low-altitude route that shows you the world's highest mountain without the long days and extreme heights of Everest Base Camp. This guide explains what Syangboche is, how to get there, what to see, when to go and what it costs.

The altitude of the airstrip varies by source (figures from about 3,748 m to 3,780 m appear), and the hotel is commonly listed at 3,880 m. Treat all figures as approximate.
Syangboche (also spelled Shyangboche) is a plateau and ridge on the slopes above Namche Bazaar, inside Sagarmatha National Park. It is best known for two things.
1. The Syangboche airstrip. A small airstrip was built here in the early 1970s to serve as a gateway to the nearby Hotel Everest View. It is an unpaved strip, and today it is mainly a scenic spot rather than a working airport. One aviation source lists it as not currently in operation, and a trekker's account notes that it has no scheduled air services.
2. The Everest View Hotel. At 3,880 m, the hotel holds a Guinness World Record as the world's highest hotel and offers a clear panorama of major peaks including Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. The hotel is covered in more detail on the Everest View Hotel page.
Beyond the airstrip, trails lead from Syangboche to Khumjung and Khunde, villages known for monasteries, stone houses and strong traditions.
Most trekkers reach Syangboche on foot during their acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar.
| Stage | Approx. Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Namche Bazaar to Syangboche airstrip | 45 minutes to 1.5 hours | Steep uphill, often done as an acclimatization hike |
| Airstrip to Everest View Hotel | About 30 to 45 minutes | One trekker reports a 45-minute walk from the airstrip to the hotel. |
| Namche to Everest View Hotel (direct) | About 2 hours | The hotel sits roughly 2 km uphill from Namche, a two-hour trek. |
| Hotel to Khumjung | About 45 to 60 minutes | Gentle trail through the village |
| Return to Namche | About 1 to 1.5 hours | Downhill, hard on the knees |
The 7-day Nepal Trip Services itinerary flies you from Kathmandu (or Ramechhap in peak season) to Lukla, then trekking via Phakding to Namche, with the Everest View Hotel and Khumjung hike on your rest day. This is the slower, safer route because your body adapts gradually.
According to the hotel's own information as reported by one traveler, guests can charter a helicopter to fly from Kathmandu to the Syangboche airstrip or land at the hotel's helipad. Helicopters also drop guests directly at the hotel, and scenic tours often use Syangboche as a stop. See Helicopter Services for options.
Important: Flying straight from Kathmandu to nearly 3,800 m skips acclimatization. Visitors who arrive by air are often out of breath at this altitude, while trekkers who have walked up from Lukla cope much better. If you fly, keep your time on the ground short and follow your pilot's and guide's advice.
On a clear morning you can see Mount Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kongde Ri. Go early, because clouds often build by late morning.
Stop for tea, coffee or breakfast on the terrace. Food and drinks at the hotel are not included in the Nepal Trip Services package, so bring cash.
A short, sloping plateau with a view down over Namche. It is a good place for photos and for understanding the scale of the valley.
Continue to Khumjung (about 3,780 m) to visit the Hillary School and the village monastery. Quiet lanes, stone walls and potato fields give a calm contrast to busy Namche.
Back in Namche, visit the Sherpa Culture Museum and, if your dates fit, the Saturday market.
| Day | Route | Altitude | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive Kathmandu | 1,400 m | Briefing and gear check |
| 2 | Fly to Lukla, trek to Phakding | 2,610 m | About 3 to 4 hours walking |
| 3 | Phakding to Namche Bazaar | 3,440 m | Hardest day; Hillary Bridge and park entrance |
| 4 | Acclimatization day: hike to Syangboche, Everest View Hotel and Khumjung | 3,440 m (sleep) | About 4 to 5 hours round trip |
| 5 | Namche to Lukla | 2,827 m | Long, mostly downhill day |
| 6 | Fly Lukla to Kathmandu | 1,400 m | Farewell dinner |
| 7 | Final departure |
Full details are on the Everest View Trek page.
| Season | Months | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Autumn | September to November | Dry, stable weather and the clearest views. Best overall. |
| Spring | March to May | Mild days and blooming rhododendrons on the lower trail. Clear mornings, with afternoon clouds by May. |
| Winter | December to February | Cold but often clear and quiet. Snow or ice is possible. |
| Monsoon | June to August | Rain, cloud, slippery trails and flight delays. Not ideal for views. |
Because Syangboche stays below about 3,900 m, it works in winter more easily than higher Everest routes. For seasonal detail, see spring trekking in Nepal and autumn trekking in Nepal.
Namche sits at 3,440 m and Syangboche at about 3,750 to 3,780 m, so altitude symptoms are possible even on a short hike. Follow these rules:
Permits: Two permits are required: the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. Recent guides list both at about NPR 3,000 each, but some sources differ, so confirm the current figure. Nepal Trip Services arranges both and includes them in the trek package.
Trek price: The Everest View Trek is listed from US$870 per person, with group pricing:
| Group size | Price per person |
|---|---|
| 1 person | US$900 |
| 2 people | US$870 |
| 3 to 6 people | US$850 |
| 7 to 10 people | US$830 |
Included: airport transfers, Kathmandu to Lukla flights, 2 nights in a Kathmandu hotel, 4 nights in teahouses, meals on trek, a licensed guide, a porter (1 per 2 trekkers), permits, an oximeter, a first-aid kit and a duffel bag.
Not included: international flights, visa, personal gear, drinks, charging, hot showers, Wi-Fi, food and drinks at the Everest View Hotel, insurance, helicopter charters and tips. Helicopter prices vary by operator, season and number of passengers, so ask for a written quote.
Keep your total luggage under the 15 kg Lukla flight limit. For a full list, see the Everest View Trek page.
Syangboche works as a short side trip on longer routes, such as the Classic Everest Base Camp Trek, the Gokyo Lakes Trek and the Everest Three High Passes Trek. Browse all options on the Everest Region Treks page, or use the Trip Planner to design a custom itinerary.
Syangboche is a ridge and plateau directly above Namche Bazaar in the Everest (Khumbu) region of Nepal, within Sagarmatha National Park. It is best known for the Syangboche airstrip and the Everest View Hotel, and it sits on the trail to the villages of Khumjung and Khunde.
Most trekkers visit it on a day hike from Namche during acclimatization. It is not a separate trek in its own right, but a highlight of routes such as the Everest View Trek.
Sources give slightly different figures. The airstrip is usually listed at about 3,750 to 3,780 m, with figures from 3,748 m to 3,780 m appearing, and the nearby Everest View Hotel is commonly listed at 3,880 m. Namche Bazaar is 3,440 m, so you gain roughly 300 to 450 m on the hike.
Treat all altitudes as approximate, and use your guide's daily briefing for exact numbers.
Walk. A steep, well-marked trail climbs from Namche to the ridge. The walk to the Syangboche airstrip takes about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on fitness and acclimatization. From the airstrip, the Everest View Hotel is a further 30 to 45 minutes' walk, and Khumjung is another 45 to 60 minutes beyond. hillarysteptrek
Start early, carry water and walk slowly. Many trekkers combine all three stops in one 4 to 5 hour acclimatization day.
It is easy to moderate, but the first section is steep and you are above 3,400 m, so it feels harder than the distance suggests. Most healthy walkers manage it comfortably if they have rested a day in Namche. The descent back to Namche is easier on the lungs but can tire the knees, so trekking poles help.
If you feel unwell, do not push on. Rest, drink fluids and tell your guide.
The airstrip was built in the early 1970s to serve the Everest View Hotel, but it is not used for regular scheduled passenger flights today. One aviation source lists it as not in operation, and a traveler's report states that it has no scheduled air services.
What you will see are helicopters, which land at or near Syangboche for hotel guests and scenic tours. Rules and availability can change, so always ask your operator or helicopter company for current information.
Yes, by private charter. The hotel's own information, as reported by one traveler, says guests can charter a helicopter from Kathmandu to the Syangboche airstrip or to the hotel's helipad. Helicopter tours that combine Everest views with a breakfast stop at the hotel are also popular.
Costs depend on the operator, season, aircraft and group size, and flights depend on weather. Because you gain altitude very quickly, keep your time at Syangboche short if you have not acclimatized. See Helicopter Services for options.
On a clear day you can see Mount Everest (8,849 m), Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kongde Ri and Kusum Kanguru, along with the Dudh Koshi valley below. The hotel advertises unobstructed views of seven major peaks.
Everest appears as a dark pyramid behind the Nuptse-Lhotse wall rather than as the tallest-looking peak, which surprises many first-time visitors. Early morning is best, since cloud often builds by late morning.
No, but they are very close. Syangboche is the ridge and airstrip area, while the Everest View Hotel is a separate lodge on the ridge, about a 30 to 45 minute walk beyond the airstrip. The hotel, at 3,880 m, holds a Guinness World Record for the highest hotel.
You can visit the hotel for tea or breakfast even if you are not staying there. Food and drinks at the hotel are not included in the Nepal Trip Services package, so carry cash. Read more on the Everest View Hotel page.
September to November and March to May are best, with clear skies and stable weather. Autumn gives the sharpest views, while spring adds flowering rhododendrons on the lower trails. Winter (December to February) is cold but often very clear and quiet, and it is possible at this lower altitude. The monsoon (June to August) brings rain, cloud and flight delays.
Always go early in the day, in any season.
Yes, a mild one. At about 3,750 to 3,880 m, symptoms such as headache, nausea and tiredness can occur, especially if you ascend too fast. The risk is lower if you walk up from Lukla and spend a full day in Namche first, and higher if you fly directly from Kathmandu.
Follow the standard rules: walk slowly, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, climb high and sleep low, and descend if symptoms worsen. Your guide carries a pulse oximeter and first-aid kit on the Everest View Trek.
Yes. Syangboche is inside Sagarmatha National Park, so you need the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. Recent guides list both at about NPR 3,000 each, but some sources differ, so confirm current fees. Your permits are checked at Lukla and Monjo.
No separate permit is needed for Syangboche, Khumjung or the Everest View Hotel. Nepal Trip Services arranges both permits and includes them in the Everest View Trek package.
The Nepal Trip Services Everest View Trek takes 7 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu, with about 4 days of walking and a built-in acclimatization day in Namche. It is graded easy to moderate, reaches a maximum of about 3,880 m, and requires no previous trekking experience.
It is a strong choice for first-time trekkers, families and travelers short on time. You still need reasonable fitness, so aim to walk 4 to 6 hours a day on hilly trails.
The trip is listed from US$870 per person, with group pricing of US$900 for 1 person, US$870 for 2, US$850 for 3 to 6 and US$830 for 7 to 10. The price includes domestic flights, accommodation, meals on trek, a guide, a porter (1 per 2 trekkers), permits and an oximeter.
It excludes international flights, visa, insurance, personal gear, drinks, charging, hot showers, Wi-Fi, helicopter charters and tips. Always request a written quote and check the current price.
There are no ordinary teahouses on the Syangboche ridge itself. The main option is the Everest View Hotel, a small lodge of about 12 rooms, which you can stay at on request. It is more expensive than a standard teahouse, so book well ahead in peak season.
On the standard Nepal Trip Services itinerary, you sleep in Namche (3,440 m), which follows the "climb high, sleep low" principle. If you want a special night at the hotel, ask about adding it as an extension.
Yes. Syangboche, the Everest View Hotel and Khumjung are a natural acclimatization day on the way to Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes or the Three High Passes. Many longer itineraries include them, and some add a night in Khumjung.
If you only have a week, the Everest View Trek gives you the Syangboche experience on its own. If you have two weeks or more, see the Classic Everest Base Camp Trek or the Gokyo Lakes Trek.
Syangboche is one of the great bargains of the Everest region: a short, rewarding climb above Namche Bazaar that delivers a wide-open Himalayan panorama, a glimpse of Sherpa life in Khumjung, and a cup of tea at the world's highest hotel. It works as a rest-day hike on a longer trek, or as the centerpiece of a one-week journey for families, beginners and busy travelers.
