Few mountains dominate a village the way Kongde Ri dominates Namche Bazaar. Wake up in the Sherpa capital, open your lodge curtains, and a huge wall of rock and ice rises to the west. Most trekkers photograph it long before they learn its name.
This guide covers everything you need to know about Kongde Ri (also spelled Kwangde Ri): its height, location, the best places to see it, the easiest way to visit, the best season, permits, costs, and answers to the 15 most-searched questions.

Note on elevation: Sources disagree because Kongde Ri has several summits. The figure of 6,187 m is the one most commonly quoted.
Kongde Ri is a multi-summit Himalayan peak that rises directly above the Bhote Koshi valley. It is not one of the famous 8,000 m giants, but its position makes it unforgettable. It stands in front of Namche Bazaar like a guardian, so almost every trekker heading to Everest passes beneath it.
Local Sherpas regard the mountain as holy, and it is treated with respect rather than as a trophy. Although it is officially listed as a trekking peak, its routes are steep, technical and rarely climbed, and operators describe them as unsuitable for typical commercial trekking-peak trips. In practice, most visitors enjoy Kongde Ri as a spectacular backdrop rather than a summit goal.
Kongde Ri sits in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal, inside the zone around Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its closest hub is Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), which sits in a horseshoe-shaped bowl directly beneath the peak's slopes.
To reach the area, you fly from Kathmandu (or Ramechhap in peak season) to Lukla, then follow the Dudh Koshi River north through Phakding and Monjo. See our guide to the Kathmandu to Lukla flight for baggage limits and delay planning.
The classic view. From the village's terraced lanes, the peak towers above rooftops and prayer flags. Early morning light turns its upper slopes gold.
From this famous terrace, Kongde Ri appears in a wide panorama alongside Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku. It is the single best viewpoint for photographing the whole skyline in one frame.
Quiet lanes, stone walls and potato fields frame the mountains beautifully. Add the Hillary School and the monastery known for its "yeti scalp" relic and you have a cultural stop with a great view.
A short climb above Namche opens even wider views, especially at sunrise.
You do not need to be a mountaineer to enjoy Kongde Ri. The Everest View Trek is a short, comfortable route that takes you directly beneath the mountain and up to the Everest View Hotel, where Kongde Ri is listed among the main peaks you will see.

Although Kongde Ri is listed on Nepal's trekking-peak system, treat it as a serious mountaineering objective:
Climbers usually prepare on easier objectives first. If you are not experienced, the Everest View Trek is the right way to enjoy the peak.
| Season | Months | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Autumn | Sep–Nov | Crystal-clear skies, stable weather, best mountain views. Read about autumn trekking in Nepal. |
| Spring | Mar–May | Warm days and blooming rhododendrons. See spring trekking in Nepal. |
| Winter | Dec–Feb | Cold, very clear and quiet. Possible with warm gear. |
| Monsoon | Jun–Aug | Rain, cloud and Lukla flight delays. Not ideal for views. |
Our tip: October gives the clearest views but is the busiest month. Book 2–3 months ahead.
Visiting Kongde Ri's viewpoints on the Everest View route needs two permits (2026 rates as listed on our trek page):
| Permit | Cost for Foreign Nationals |
|---|---|
| Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit | NPR 3,000 (about US$21) |
| Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit | NPR 3,000 (about US$21) |
No TIMS card is required in the Everest region. Both permits are included when you book with Nepal Trip Services. Fees are set by the authorities and can change.
The viewing route is far easier than the mountain itself. Still, Namche sits at 3,440 m, and altitude sickness can affect anyone above 2,500 m.
Safe-trekking rules:
Buy travel insurance that covers trekking to at least 4,000 m and emergency helicopter evacuation. If you want a faster return, ask about helicopter services.
Keep your total baggage to about 15 kg for the Lukla flight.
Respecting Kongde Ri's sacred status helps keep the Khumbu welcoming for everyone.
Kongde Ri is in the Khumbu region of Nepal, about 4 km west of Namche Bazaar in Solukhumbu District. It stands near Sagarmatha National Park.
The commonly quoted height is about 6,187 m (20,299 ft). Some operators list 6,011 m or 6,093 m because the mountain has several summits.
Yes. Kongde Ri, Kwangde Ri, Kwande and Kangde Ri are different spellings of the same mountain.
Yes. It rises right above Namche, so you can see it from the village itself, especially in clear morning light.
The Everest View Hotel (about 3,880 m) offers a wide panorama that includes Kongde Ri, Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku.
Kongde Ri is not a standard trekking destination. The easiest way to experience it is the 7-day Everest View Trek, which passes beneath it and climbs to a classic viewpoint.
Yes. The Everest View Trek is graded easy to moderate, stays below about 3,900 m, and needs no previous trekking experience. Basic fitness is enough.
Yes, but only experienced climbers should try. It is listed as a trekking peak, yet its routes are steep and technical, and it needs an NMA permit and a licensed guide.
It is considered one of the harder trekking peaks. Operators describe the routes as challenging and unsuitable for standard commercial trekking-peak trips.
Autumn (September–November) and spring (March–May) offer the clearest skies and most stable weather. Winter also works with warm gear.
For the Everest View route you need the Sagarmatha National Park permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit, about NPR 3,000 each. Climbing the peak needs an additional NMA permit.
The risk is lower than on Everest Base Camp but not zero, since Namche is at 3,440 m. Use the acclimatisation day, drink plenty of water and report symptoms early.
Our 7-day Everest View Trek starts from US$870 per person, with group discounts. The price includes flights, permits, guide, porter and accommodation. International flights, visa and insurance are extra.
A licensed guide is strongly recommended. Guides handle permits and logistics, monitor altitude symptoms and share local knowledge.

Kongde Ri may not be a household name like Everest, but for many trekkers it is the mountain that defines the Namche skyline. You do not need technical skills to enjoy it. A one-week journey, a good guide and a clear morning at the Everest View Hotel are enough.
